Cardeñajimeno
Village
A municipality in the comarca of Alfoz de Burgos, seven kilometres from the provincial capital, on the banks of the river Arlanzón; it has 1,185 inhabitants divided between the local entities of Cardeñajimeno and San Medel. Its name derives from the medieval form Caradenia Ximeno Piscatore, the sacred promontory of Simón el Pescador, and in the past it depended jurisdictionally, as an abbatial lordship, on the Monastery of Benitos de Cardeña, with a pedáneo mayor. In 2015 it was included in the inventory that Spain presented to Unesco for the extension of the Camino de Santiago, and its church, dedicated to the Assumption of Nuestra Señora, is the main monument of the municipality.
