Cavia
Village
Cavia is a municipality of 246 inhabitants in the comarca of Alfoz de Burgos, situated beside the river Arlanzón, 18 kilometres from the provincial capital. It is documented for the first time on 1 March in the year 899, in a document preserved in the archive of the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña. In the 14th century, Alfonso XI granted Cavia to the Rojas family, later dukes of Lerma, whose fortified house is preserved; in the 18th century the tower and the house passed to the Altamira family. It was the birthplace of Gregorio Mayoral Sendino, an executioner of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its main festival is on 15 August, that of the Virgen de Río Cavia, on which, after mass, the image is carried in procession through the village; San Roque is also celebrated, on 16 August.
