Villalbilla de Burgos
Village
Villalbilla de Burgos is a municipality of 1,554 inhabitants situated eight kilometres from the capital, in the Alfoz de Burgos district, south of the river Arlanzón; it also includes the settlements of Villacienzo and Renuncio. It was a royal-jurisdiction place within the historic Burgos alfoz, with a local mayor (alcalde pedáneo), and in the mid-19th century it had barely 189 inhabitants. Its church is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. The village is known for its Living Way of the Cross, performed every Good Friday since 1973 on the initiative of Father Félix Martínez and the young members of the peña (club) El Pato; the staging of the Passion came to attract thousands of visitors in the 1980s and 1990s and still today draws numerous locals and outsiders.
