Buniel
Village
Buniel is a village in the comarca of Alfoz de Burgos, on the banks of the river Arlanzón, thirteen kilometres west of the provincial capital, at the confluence of the N-620 and A-62 roads; it has 632 inhabitants. It arose around the year 884, after the founding of the city and castle of Burgos, when a man called Bonello led a group of families there, half soldiers and half farmhands, who settled and gave the village its name; the name Buniel is first recorded as such on 14 November 1058, in a document of the monastery of Cardeña. Neighbouring villages call its inhabitants “renacuajos”, people who have always been devoted chiefly to farming. It preserves the church of Santa María la Mayor and celebrates its patroness of the Rosario in October.
