What to see and do in Santa María del Campo

Santa María del Campo
Village
Santa María del Campo is a town of 508 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, in western Burgos, standing on a hill between the valleys of the Arlanza and the Arlanzón, beside the Madre stream, 36 kilometres from the capital. In antiquity the hill may have served as cereal cropland for the Vaccaei and Arevaci peoples, within the orbit of the Arevacian hillfort of Pallantia, present-day Palenzuela. It arose in the early Middle Ages under the name Campo, at the dawn of the 11th century, as part of the expansion of Christian settlers towards the Duero; the earliest documentary references appear in the Becerro Galicano, the cartulary of San Millán de la Cogolla. Its church of the Asunción is crowned by a Renaissance tower, the Buena Moza, one of the finest of the Spanish Renaissance.
The tower of Diego de Siloé
Monument
Diego de Siloé began in 1527 this Renaissance tower, which his pupil Juan de Salas continued. Chueca Goitia considered it the most beautiful and monumental of the Spanish Renaissance, and the archbishopric called it the pearl of the diocese.
The royal court housed in the Casa del Cordón
Historical milestone
The palace of the Barahona, recognisable by the Franciscan cord on its façade, housed in 1507 the court of Juana I and of Fernando el Católico, who came to the town on the occasion of the investiture of cardinal Cisneros.
The three gates of the town wall
Monument
Of the rectangular enclosure of stone and rammed earth there remain three fifteenth-century gates with battlements and machicolations: the arch of la Fuente, that of la Vega and that of la Costana, through which entry to the town was controlled.
The panels by Berruguete and the Flemish tapestries
Curiosity
The former collegiate church holds a heritage out of keeping with a village of this size: paintings by Pedro Berruguete, a Gothic monstrance and processional crosses, sixteenth-century Flemish tapestries and choir stalls of the Miraflores school.
