What to see and do in Villanueva de Gómez

Villanueva de Gómez
Village
Villanueva de Gómez is a village in the comarca of La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, with about 119 inhabitants, situated at 890 metres above sea level near the Adaja river, crossed by the Camino de Santiago routes of Levante and Sureste. Its municipal area, with nearly 900 hectares of stone pine, black pine and maritime pine woodland, holm oak and broom, holds a stable population of Spanish imperial eagle. The earliest settlements date back to the sixth or seventh millennium BC, and around the first millennium BC the area was influenced by the Vettone culture from the nearby Castro de las Cogotas. It holds its festivities during the Octave of Corpus Christi, under the invocation of the Virgen de los Dolores.
The pine forest of the Adaja
Nature
The pine woods that surround the village, on the left bank of the Adaja, are of high ecological value and shelter threatened Mediterranean fauna, among them the Spanish imperial eagle; it was that presence that served to halt their felling in 2009.
The halted large-scale development of the pine forest
Historical milestone
The project envisaged 7,500 homes, three golf courses, a hotel and a riding club on the pine wood. When the works were halted in 2009, after the complaint by SEO/BirdLife, some 10,000 pines had already been felled and kilometres of access roads opened.
