El Oso
Village
El Oso is a municipality in the province of Ávila situated next to the laguna del Oso, at an altitude of 893 metres and 22 kilometres from the capital. Its name does not come from the animal but probably from the Latin lutosus, “muddy”, after the great natural lagoon beside which it sits; by around 1250 the name El Oso was already mentioned in the recording of revenues that Cardinal Gil Torres assigned to the Church and the bishopric of Ávila. Popular etymology attributed it to a granite figure in front of the church that was actually a Vettonian stone boar, now lost. In the mid-19th century the place had 341 inhabitants, according to Madoz. Today it has 125 inhabitants.
