Bernuy-Zapardiel
Village
Bernuy-Zapardiel is a hamlet in the Moraña Alta, in the north of the province of Ávila, at 865 metres of altitude, with about 79 inhabitants. Its name would derive from the genitive of the Germanic personal name Bermudus, and the district is crossed by the Adaja, Zapardiel, Trabancos and Arevalillo rivers, all tributaries of the Duero. It belonged to the sexmo de San Juan, whose head town, the village of San Juan de la Torre, disappeared after an outbreak of plague, thereafter becoming part of the partido judicial of Arévalo. In the mid-19th century it had 269 inhabitants. Its church of San Martín preserves the mudéjar apse and a carving of the Cristo de la Luz from around 1300. The hamlet lives on dry farming, chiefly barley and sunflower, and on cattle, sheep and pig farming.
