Fontiveros
Village
Fontiveros is a town in the district of La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, with about 715 inhabitants, birthplace of the mystic poet Saint John of the Cross. It sits on a plain at 884 metres of altitude, watered by the Zapardiel river, a tributary of the Duero, and its name, already documented in the 13th century as Fuentyvessos, admits several explanations, from a Latin-Celtic combination of “spring” and the name of the chieftain Besós to the Basque Iturbero, “hot spring”. Its church of San Cipriano is said to be the largest mudéjar church in La Moraña, with a late Gothic crossing by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, and every 14 December the village honours its most illustrious saint with the cocido sanjuanero.

Historical milestone
In a house in this village of the countryside the future San Juan de la Cruz was born, the son of a weaver. On the site an oratory was raised in 1650 which the Discalced Carmelites later enlarged as a convent, completed in 1721.
