What to see and do in El Tiemblo

El Tiemblo
Village
El Tiemblo is a town in the province of Ávila, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, situated between the El Burguillo and San Juan reservoirs, on the Alberche river. The area was conquered by Christians in the eleventh century and repopulated in the twelfth, after the conquest of Toledo, although the frontier with the Muslims remained unstable until the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa; the Libro de la montería of Alfonso XI already mentions the Sierra de Eruelas, above El Tiemblo, as good bear country. On its territory stand the Toros de Guisando, four Vettonian sculptures from the Iron Age, and it shares with neighbouring municipalities the Iruelas valley nature reserve, with its colony of black vultures and a centuries-old chestnut grove. It has a population of around 4580.
Monastery of San Jerónimo de Guisando
Monument
The monastery of St Jerome of Guisando, or of the Hieronymites of Guisando, is a ruined monastery of the Hieronymite Order located in the municipality of El Tiemblo (Ávila), at the foot of the mountains. According to the 1954 decree that declared it a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the category of historic site — together with its gardens, a hermitage and some caves — it preserves a cloister transitional between Gothic and Renaissance and the walls of the church; the hermitage was built by the Marquis of Villena, and the caves are said to have been inhabited by Hieronymite monks before the monastery was built, in the 14th century, in 1375. The declaration also included, as part of the same historic complex, the nearby Toros de Guisando. A fire devastated it in 1979 and it has remained in ruins ever since.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de El Tiemblo
Monument
Its tower was raised in the 15th century and the interior holds carvings of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is the principal building of a villa that broke away from the jurisdiction of Ávila in the middle of the 15th century.
The chestnut grove of El Tiemblo
Nature
A chestnut wood situated within the Valle de Iruelas reserve, famous for preserving centuries-old specimens of enormous trunk. Autumn, when the leaf turns ochre, is the season of most visits.
The granting of the town to don Álvaro de Luna
Historical milestone
John II granted in 1445 the town to the constable don Álvaro de Luna, detaching it from the jurisdiction of Ávila. Within the same municipality, beside the Vettonian stone boars, the Hieronymites had kept their monastery since the 14th century.
The Easter Monday empanada
Food and drink
The pilgrimage festival known as La Empanada has gone since the seventies to the spot of San Gregorio, where the families eat in the open air the pie that gives the day its name, held on the Monday following Easter Sunday.
