What to see and do in Cebreros

Cebreros
Village
Cebreros is a town in the district of Burgohondo-Cebreros-El Tiemblo, in the province of Ávila, at 755 metres above sea level, with around 3345 inhabitants. Granted in 1301 by Ferdinand IV to his uncle the Infante Juan, it preserves from the mid-fourteenth century the so-called iglesia vieja (old church), rebuilt and turned since 2009 into the Museo de Adolfo Suárez y la Transición; in 1562, under Philip II, it gained independence from the jurisdiction of Ávila and became a town. Isabella the Catholic passed through the village four times, and in 1504 the funeral cortège carrying her body towards Granada had to stop here. Its Herrerian church of Santiago Apóstol was designed by Alonso de Covarrubias around 1550; its carnival is a festival of national tourist interest, and its wines have held a designation of origin since 2017.
Church of Santiago Apóstol de Cebreros
Monument
Work on the church of St James the Apostle in Cebreros began around 1550, based on designs attributed to Alonso de Covarrubias, in the years when the town was prospering as a trade route between Toledo and Valladolid; four other master stonemasons joined Covarrubias, and after his death he was succeeded by Pedro de Tolosa, master builder of El Escorial. The works dragged on for half a century because of financial problems, which prevented the building of a second tower planned in the project. The church, a hall-church with three naves of equal height, reaches 54 metres in length and 22 in height, with a blind dome 10.75 metres wide over the crossing. Inside are scenes by Jusepe Leonardo and a Jacobean altarpiece related to that of St James in Ávila. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1991.
The pillory of Cebreros
Monument
Raised around 1562, the year in which the villa freed itself from the jurisdiction of Ávila, this column of justice bears four carved figures —a woman, a man, a ram and a monkey— whose reading is still disputed.
The Adolfo Suárez and the Transition Museum
Monument
The Adolfo Suárez and the Transition Museum (MAST) is a museum of contemporary history that pays tribute, from the president's home town of Cebreros (Ávila), to the politician and to the people who made the arrival of democracy in Spain possible, as well as to the historical process of the Transition itself. It was installed on the ruins of the first church of Cebreros, known as the Iglesia Vieja, built in the second half of the 14th century, after a thorough project of reconstruction and rehabilitation that made it possible to house the first museum dedicated to the history of the Spanish Transition. It opened to the public on 12 June 2009.
The recognition of the Cebreros designation
Historical milestone
In 2017 the protected denomination of origin bearing the town's name was approved, covering the wines of thirty-five municipalities of the Alberche valley, with red garnacha and albillo real as the main varieties.
The carnival rosquillas and huesillos (pastries)
Food and drink
The local confectionery turns on rosquillas and huesillos, sweets eaten above all during carnival, the festival the villa holds forty days before Semana Santa and which has been of national tourist interest since 2022.
