What to see and do in El Hoyo de Pinares

El Hoyo de Pinares
Village
El Hoyo de Pinares is a town in the province of Ávila, on the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Sierra de Gredos, right in the basin of the Alberche river; its houses spread in a spiral from the hollow that gives it its name until merging with the pine forest, where the summer population comes to triple the 2180 inhabitants recorded in the census. Settled in the Iron Age by the Vettones, it survived as a Christian outpost during the Muslim occupation of these mountains, then known as "El Foyo"; among its former hamlets was the depopulated Navaserrada, whose residents became part of it. It celebrates Saint Michael on 29 September with encierros (bull runs), and on the last Saturday of May, the pilgrimage of the Virgen de Navaserrada, and its forested surroundings shelter birds such as the black vulture and the Spanish imperial eagle.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de El Hoyo
Monument
Raised in the 16th century, it is the religious centre of a villa that bought its title from the Crown in the time of Felipe IV, after its first petition to become independent of Ávila had been refused in 1587.
The pilgrimage of the Virgen de Navaserrada
Activity
On the last Saturday of May the village goes up in pilgrimage to a meadow in the pine wood where in the sixties the remains of the old medieval hermitage were moved, today the centre of the day in the country.
