What to see and do in San Bartolomé de Pinares

San Bartolomé de Pinares
Village
A town in the comarca of Burgohondo-El Tiemblo-Cebreros, in Ávila, situated at 1,039 m of altitude; it has around 479 inhabitants and is known for the Luminarias, a festival in which, on the eve of San Antón, more than a hundred horses jump over some twenty bonfires so that the smoke may purify them. Its church of San Bartolomé Apóstol, with a Herrerian façade, is the symbol of the town, and the town hall stands on the plaza de Cascorro, so named because Eloy Gonzalo, the hero of Cascorro, lived here before setting off as a volunteer for the war in Cuba; a fountain bearing his statue recalls the bond he formed at the time with a young woman from the village. Madoz recorded 975 inhabitants in the town in the mid-19th century.

The Fountain of Cascorro
Curiosity
The monument in the square recalls Eloy Gonzalo, the volunteer soldier who became famous in the war in Cuba. The square that holds it, the seat of the town hall, is for that reason named Cascorro.
