What to see and do in El Hornillo

El Hornillo
Village
El Hornillo is a village in the province of Ávila, on the southern slope of the sierra de Gredos, with 263 inhabitants, at 748 metres above sea level. It already existed as a hamlet in the 15th century and broke away from the lordship of Arenas in 1759, when it gained the title of town by a town charter signed by Ferdinand VI; this is attested by its rollo (jurisdictional pillar), built in the second half of the 18th century, three metres tall, with five drums and a Doric capital, now moved beside the river from its original site near the hermitage of San Marcos. In the mid-19th century the village had 475 inhabitants. Its festivals include San Marcos on 25 April, San Juan on 27 December and, the most notable, the Cherry Festival, on the second weekend of August.
The pillory of El Hornillo
Monument
Three metres of stone with five drums and a Doric capital topped by four arms in a cross, symbol of the villa status granted in 1759. It stood beside the hermitage of San Marcos and was later moved to the riverbank, at the Puente Nuevo.
The Cherry Tree Festival
Activity
On the second weekend of August the village devotes its festivities to the cherry tree, one of the fruit trees which, along with the chestnut, thrives on the slopes of this district on the southern side of Gredos, at 748 metres of altitude.
