What to see and do in Erustes

Erustes
Village
Erustes is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in the province of Toledo, with 220 inhabitants, whose name could derive from the Basque irusta, "clover." Its occupation as early as the 4th century is documented by a fragment of a Roman-Christian sarcophagus found on the site; in 1399 it appears cited as one of the hamlets granted by Alvar Pérez de Guzmán, chief constable of Seville, and it long belonged to the county of Orgaz. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción preserves notable wooden ceilings in the medieval tradition, whose richness reflects the importance the town had in the 14th century. The municipality holds feasts in honour of San Blas on 3 February, San Jorge on 23 April and San Roque on 16 August.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Erustes
Monument
Parish church that preserves notable wooden ceilings of medieval tradition, reflecting the importance of the place in the 14th century. Built in the 15th century in Mudéjar style, it stands out for its slender rectangular bell tower with four stages, built in Toledan brickwork with courses of river cobbles and brick, and for the rich coffered ceilings covering its three naves, with polychrome decoration on corbels and tie-beams preserved up to the middle of the central nave. The fourth stage of the tower, the most ornate, shows a band of seven lobed horseshoe arches. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1975 and restored in the 2010s, it today holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
