What to see and do in Escalonilla

Escalonilla
Village
Escalonilla, in the Torrijos comarca (Toledo), has 1,545 inhabitants (2025) in a deep valley beside the cañada Real Segoviana. Its name may be a diminutive of Escalona derived from the Latin ascalonia, “onion of Ascalon” (today’s shallot), a word already recorded by Nebrija in 1495. Remains of the deserted villages of El Guerrero and Casas Albas, the latter vanished in the 15th century, have been found within its municipal area; the residents of Casas Albas joined Escalonilla around 1500. Its 15th-century church of Santa María Magdalena preserves a large Baroque Churrigueresque altarpiece, 16th- and 17th-century religious imagery, and a restored tower where bullet marks can still be seen. Within its territory lies El Charcón, a spring and wetland visited by migratory and wintering birds, and its main festival honours the Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas.

Festivities of el Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas de Escalonilla
Activity
The festivities of the Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas of Escalonilla (Toledo) are held from 6 to 15 September, with the main day on the 14th. They include novenas with the singing of motets in the church, which often overflow the building, the release of young cows (vaquillas) that draw people from the whole district, and a procession regarded as the area's religious act of greatest faith, devotion and attendance, which each year draws descendants of Escalonilla emigrants from various parts of Spain and abroad.
