What to see and do in La Mata

La Mata
Village
La Mata is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in Toledo, with 910 inhabitants, situated on a plain at the foot of the colina de Arcolla; the arroyo del Carpio rises in the town and flows into the Tajo. Documented since 1205, it was founded around the 15th century as a hamlet dependent on Santa Olalla and the county of Orgaz, and obtained the title of independent town in 1652, although it remained within the lordship of Orgaz; in 1930 it absorbed the old settlement of San Pedro de la Mata, the year it reached its maximum population, 2,159 inhabitants. Its parish church of San Juan Bautista combines elements from the 16th to the 19th centuries and preserves a Baroque organ and a notable processional cross; the ermita de San Pedro de La Mata, a 16th-century Mudéjar building, is also found there.
