What to see and do in Totanés

Totanés
Village
Totanés is a municipality in the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 361 inhabitants (INE 2025), on a plain crossed by ravines and streams that are tributaries of the Tagus. In the 7th century, San Eugenio de Toledo dedicated a poem to a basilica of San Félix located at 'Tutanesio', the place's old name. Resettled by Toledan Mozarabs from the first half of the 12th century, it maintained that tradition until the 18th and 19th centuries. Its parish church of the Concepción de Nuestra Señora has three naves with Mudéjar timber roofing, has been dedicated to the Immaculate since the mid-16th century and preserves baroque additions; the Franciscan Sebastián de Totanés was born in the town, a missionary in the Philippines and author of an Arte de la lengua tagala.

Fray Sebastián de Totanés
Curiosity
The Franciscan friar Sebastián Gómez de Herrera, known as Fray Sebastián de Totanés (1688-1748), was born in the Toledo town that gives him his name and took the Franciscan habit at the convent of Fuensalida at the age of seventeen. After studying and teaching Philosophy in Toledo, he left at twenty-six as a missionary for the Philippines, where he arrived in 1717 after a spell teaching in Mexico. There he was minister of the Sampaloc mission and prior of the convent of Manila, where he promoted the Capilla de las Lágrimas, and rose to procurator at the Cortes of Madrid and Rome. In Manila he published in 1745 his Arte y Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala, the first grammar of that language. After twenty-nine years on mission he returned to Spain, where he died at the convent of San Gil in Madrid in 1748.
