What to see and do in Cabañas de Yepes

Cabañas de Yepes
Village
Cabañas de Yepes is a municipality in the comarca of Mesa de Ocaña, in Toledo, formerly called Villafranca de Gaytán after the merger of two small settlements. Alfonso VII granted it in 1150 to the Council of San Miguel, passing to the lordship of the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos until it was bought in 1213 by the archbishop of Toledo Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada; it retains the addition of Yepes for having long been a dependent hamlet of that neighbouring town. It has 316 inhabitants. It preserves the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the hermitage of San Sebastián, from the 18th century, as well as a monument to Alejandro García Velasco, a Guardia Civil lieutenant born in the village, murdered on duty in 1997. Its main festivities are those of the Virgen del Socorro, on the last weekend of August.
Hermitage of San Sebastián de Cabañas de Yepes
Monument
An 18th-century hermitage dedicated to Saint Sebastian, patron saint of the town, whose feast day is celebrated on 20 January. It is, together with the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, one of the two historic religious buildings in the municipality.
Parish Church of Cabañas de Yepes
Monument
A church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the center of religious life in this small municipality of the Mesa de Ocaña. As early as 1846, Pascual Madoz's dictionary recorded the parish under this same dedication, with a perpetual curacy filled by competitive examination, confirming the long history of this religious institution in the village.
Villafranca de Gaytán
Curiosity
The municipality was formerly called Villafranca de Gaytán. Donated to religious institutions in 1150, it ended up part of the seigneury of the archbishopric of Toledo in 1213.
Festivities of la Virgen del Socorro
Activity
The main celebration in the festive calendar of Cabañas de Yepes, in the Mesa de Ocaña district (Toledo), in honor of the Virgen del Socorro. The patronal festivities take place on the last weekend of August, when the municipality concentrates its religious and popular events around its patron saint.
