What to see and do in Dosbarrios

Dosbarrios
Village
Dosbarrios is a municipality of Mesa de Ocaña, in Toledo, with 2,228 inhabitants, at 707 m. Its name recalls the two original settlements, Christian and Muslim - hence the moon on its coat of arms - separated by the valley of Carábanos; after its reconstruction in 1230, the Riquer brothers wrote to the king that "poblamos Duos Barrios". It was a border town during the Reconquest, with the castle of Monreal as an outpost, and in 1177 Alfonso VIII granted it, with its castle, to the Order of Santiago. In 1809, brigadier Zayas retreated to Dosbarrios after the battle of Ocaña, where the French captured his troops and burned the town. It preserves the church of Santo Tomás Cantuariense, enlarged in the 16th century, the convent of the Trinitarians, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 2010, and the hermitage of the Rosario del Campo, sanctuary of its patroness.
Church of Santo Tomás Cantuariense
Monument
The church of Santo Tomás Cantuariense, dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket, is the parish church of Dosbarrios. On the same site there was a 13th-century church which, due to the growth of the population, was rebuilt in the 16th century; it retains a bell tower, although its façade never came to include a second tower like that of Toledo Cathedral. It displays Renaissance architecture, with a robust structure and semicircular arches, with Herrerian details. Inside are preserved works by Juan Correa de Vivar, one of the most prominent Castilian painters of the Renaissance, and a main altarpiece covered in gold leaf, by an architect of the Churriguera family. The vault fresco, depicting the four evangelists, is attributed to Claudio Coello.
Convent of los Trinitarios de Dosbarrios
Monument
Former Trinitarian monastery of Dosbarrios (Toledo), declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2010 and one of the most notable historic complexes in the municipality, alongside Monreal castle and the church of Santo Tomás Cantuariense. Today the building is used as the village's function hall and auditorium.
Hermitage of el Rosario del Campo
Monument
The sanctuary of the patron saint of Dosbarrios, which holds a 16th-century image restored on several occasions after the damage of the Peninsular War.
Two Quarters, Two Communities
Curiosity
The place name refers to the municipality's origin as two settlements separated by the Carábanos valley, one Christian and the other Muslim. The resettlement is documented in 1230, when the Riquer brothers reported to the king that we have settled Duos Barrios.
The Battle That Wasn't Fought in Ocaña
Historical milestone
Much of the fighting in what is known as the battle of Ocaña of 1809 actually took place in the municipal district of Dosbarrios, which was the main setting of the engagement.
The 1177 grant to the Order of Santiago
Historical milestone
Alfonso VII handed the place to Antolino Portaguerra in 1154 and Alfonso VIII donated it to the Order of Santiago in 1177. Under the friars the settlement consolidated, as its own residents described to King Enrique I around 1230.
