What to see and do in Cedillo del Condado

Cedillo del Condado
Village
Cedillo del Condado is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra Alta, in the province of Toledo, which received a settlement charter from Count Manrique de Lara in 1152 and added 'del Condado' to its name in the 1916 municipal reform; its name may derive from Cidello, a diminutive of Cid or Seid ('little lord'). Set on a plain dotted with low hills, with plantations of olive, cereal and vine, it now has 4,525 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its municipal area, in the heart of ancient Carpetania, preserves the remains of a Carpetan sanctuary from the 4th-2nd centuries BC at the El Cerrón site. It preserves the palace of the Counts of Cedillo, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad and the El Pilón fountain, from 1879, and has the most extensive olive grove in a comarca dominated by cereal.
Palace of los Condes de Cedillo
Monument
The Palacio de los Condes de Cedillo bears witness to the county that gave the town its name. In 1487, Hernando Álvarez de Toledo, lord of Tocenaque and Manzaneque and chief accountant of the Council of the Catholic Monarchs, bought the lordship of Cedillo, and in 1496 the monarchs granted the title of Count of Cedillo to his firstborn son, Antonio Álvarez de Toledo, through a decree issued in Laredo on 3 August of that year. The title later passed, by inheritance, to the López de Ayala lineage. The building, one of the town's most notable, preserves a heraldic coat of arms on its façade.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad is the parish church of Cedillo del Condado, in the comarca of La Sagra (Toledo). The town's founding charter, granted in 1152 by Count Manrique de Lara, reveals that barely sixty years later a church had already been built in the village, very likely standing on the same site as the present-day temple.
Hermitage of Santiago Apóstol de Cedillo
Monument
A chapel located in the municipal cemetery of Cedillo del Condado, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. Its existence is documented as early as 1847, when Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico mentioned a hermitage of this dedication near the village.
Spring of El Pilón
Monument
Public fountain built in 1879, one of the historic features of the town centre along with the monumental cross near the church.
Cidello, the origin of the name of Cedillo
Curiosity
The place name is thought to derive from Cidello, possibly in connection with a Jewish physician at the court of Alfonso VI. The town received its charter of settlement in 1152 from Count Manrique de Lara and added del Condado in the municipal reform of 1916.
The oil of Cedillo del Condado
Food and drink
The olive grove of Cedillo is the most extensive in a comarca dominated by cereal, and its mill presses cornicabra and arbequina olives from the municipal district. The oil is sold loose in the town and supplies the kitchens of the surrounding area.
