What to see and do in Seseña

Seseña
Village
Seseña is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, at the northeastern edge of the province of Toledo, framed by the Jarama and Tagus rivers, with 30,907 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread across Seseña, Seseña Nuevo, Vallegrande, La Estación and El Quiñón. In the 12th century Alfonso VIII granted these lands to the bishop of Sigüenza; later it became a lordship town of Infante Felipe. In 1936 it was the site of the Battle of Seseña, one of the most cited armoured episodes of the Civil War, which destroyed most of the village and forced the building of Seseña Nuevo. In 2016 it suffered the fire of the largest tyre dump in Europe. Development along the A-4 motorway, led by El Quiñón, has made it the fourth-largest town in the province.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Seseña
Monument
A 19th-century Neoclassical church on the Plaza de la Paz, built over an earlier structure in Mudejar or Gothic style.
The Casona of Seseña
Monument
An 18th-century building characteristic of the Toledo Sagra, whose facade is presided over by a coat of arms listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Old Fountain of Seseña
Monument
A small obelisk with two running water spouts, beside which the town's public washhouse was built.
The 1936 Battle of Seseña
Historical milestone
The Battle of Seseña was fought on 29 October 1936, during the Francoist advance on Madrid, and is known as the first notable engagement of Soviet T-26 combat tanks in the Spanish Civil War. The Republican attack began at dawn with fifteen tanks under the command of Captain Paul Arman, alias Greisser, supported by Enrique Líster's 1st Mixed Brigade, militias and the new Soviet aviation. The armoured units followed a concentrated-attack tactic similar to the German Blitzkrieg, but the lack of motorised infantry prevented the advance from being exploited; on reaching Seseña, the T-26s clashed with Francoist cavalry in the narrow streets of the town, causing widespread destruction of the urban centre.
Seseña Nuevo and Regiones Devastadas
Curiosity
After the Civil War, the Directorate General of Devastated Regions promoted the creation of Seseña Nuevo two kilometres from the original village, although most residents preferred to stay in the old town.
Vega del Jarama in Seseña
Nature
The municipal district of Seseña is framed by the rivers Jarama and Tagus, which shape its farming plain in the far north-east of the province of Toledo.
The fire at the tire graveyard
Historical milestone
On 13 May 2016 the illegal dump of used tyres located in the municipal district caught fire, with more than seventy thousand tonnes accumulated. The column of smoke forced homes to be evacuated and it is considered one of the greatest recent environmental disasters in Spain.
The grant to the bishop of Sigüenza
Historical milestone
In the twelfth century Alfonso VIII granted the bishop of Sigüenza lands lying between the Jarama and the Tajo, in the present municipal district of Seseña. Dependence on a distant mitre shaped the organisation of the place throughout the Middle Ages.
El Quiñón and the growth of Seseña
Historical milestone
The housing developments raised beside the A-4, with El Quiñón at their head, took the municipality from 21,558 inhabitants in 2015 to more than 30,000 in 2025. Seseña is today the fourth town of the province and its growth has stabilised.
