What to see and do in Titulcia

Titulcia
Village
Titulcia is a village in the Community of Madrid, 39 km from the capital, near the confluence of the Jarama and Tajuña rivers, with about 1,390 inhabitants. The settlement sits on a mid-slope over gypsum ground, between the plateau of the Alcarria de Madrid, north of the Tajuña, and the river terraces that descend towards the vega, separated from the village by the Cacera irrigation canal. It was called Bayona de Tajuña until Ferdinand VII imposed on it in 1814 the name of an ancient Roman mansio. It preserves a retable by Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli and the enigmatic Cueva de la Luna.
Archaeological zone of Titulcia
Monument
An area listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2012 protecting 343 hectares with Carpetani, Roman and Andalusi levels and continuous occupation from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD; the so-called Titulcia patera came from it in 2009.
Cave of la Luna
Nature
An artificial gallery dug beneath the hill on which the village stands, whose construction the Toledo archives attribute to Cardinal Cisneros; its unusual plan and the scarcity of documentation have fed all manner of esoteric interpretations.
Bayona de Tajuña is renamed Titulcia
Historical milestone
Ferdinand VII ordered the village's name changed in 1814 so as not to recall his French captivity in Bayonne. The name chosen was that of the Roman Titulcia of the Antonine Itinerary, then believed to have stood at this point of the valley.
