The 1936 Battle of Seseña Historical milestone · Seseña, La Sagra, Toledo Image of Seseña, not of the place itself. The Battle of Seseña was fought on 29 October 1936, during the Francoist advance on Madrid, and is known as the first notable engagement of Soviet T-26 combat tanks in the Spanish Civil War. The Republican attack began at dawn with fifteen tanks under the command of Captain Paul Arman, alias Greisser, supported by Enrique Líster's 1st Mixed Brigade, militias and the new Soviet aviation. The armoured units followed a concentrated-attack tactic similar to the German Blitzkrieg, but the lack of motorised infantry prevented the advance from being exploited; on reaching Seseña, the T-26s clashed with Francoist cavalry in the narrow streets of the town, causing widespread destruction of the urban centre.
