Zarzuela de Jadraque
Village
Zarzuela de Jadraque is a municipality in the northern mountains of Guadalajara, at 1,043 metres of altitude beside the river Bornova, also known as Zarzuela de las Ollas for its pottery tradition, the most archaic in the province for preserving the most primitive techniques and tools. Most of the men practised this trade: almost every kitchen had a workshop, with a basin set in the wall for soaking the clay and a slate slab table, the sobadera, for kneading it. Pieces were thrown on a low wheel, a type of low-set potter's wheel associated with an ancestral pottery tradition practised by women; only the Asturian wheel of Faro is identical to that of Zarzuela. In the mid-19th century the village had 190 inhabitants; today it has 49.
