What to see and do in Hiendelaencina

Hiendelaencina
Village
Hiendelaencina is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara district, in the province of Guadalajara, set at the foot of the Sierra de Alto Rey beside the canyon of the Bornova river, at 1,084 metres altitude. Until 1844 it was a modest village, until the Navarrese surveyor Pedro Esteban Górriz found silver at the Cantoblanco site and the Santa Cecilia mine was opened: the vein multiplied the village's population fortyfold and yielded close to 1,200,000 kilos of metal until the mine's final closure in 1918. The mines, now abandoned, constitute a notable cultural, natural and geological heritage. It preserves a 19th-century parish church and has 107 inhabitants (INE 2025), the most populous municipality in the Alto Rey mancomunidad (association of municipalities), which groups together sixteen other municipalities.
