Negredo
Village
Negredo is a municipality of the Serranía de Guadalajara, between the Sistema Central and the Sistema Ibérico, with only 12 inhabitants and a dehesa landscape of dense holm oak woods and cereal crops. Its name may allude to the almost black colour of those holm oak woods, or derive from "enebredo", after the junipers that also populate them. At 986 metres of altitude, it arose from the resettlement following the Reconquest, and was an intermediate point on the Camino Salinero that carried salt to the capital, an activity reinforced in the 18th century under Charles III. It preserves the church of Santa María Magdalena, Romanesque from the 12th century with a Baroque altarpiece, and the hermitage of la Soledad, from around 1790. At La Dehesa, beside the Sargal stream, there is a route of about 6 km, and the festivities of San Benito are celebrated on 11 and 12 August.
