Cendejas de la Torre
Village
Cendejas de la Torre is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, at 972 m altitude, with 23 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with the 440 recorded in the mid-19th century. Its name may come from 'Candea', a term that in Navarre designated the union of several villages to defend common interests; in this case the union would have been formed by Cendejas de la Torre, Cendejas del Padrastro and Cendejas de Enmedio, the first being the original settlement, as a fortified place. At the foot of the Cerro de Quemada, remains of an old castle can be made out, and the municipality preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, rebuilt in the 18th century with a round-arched portal and pilasters with Renaissance capitals, the hermitage of la Soledad, and the Torre del Reloj (clock tower) that explains its added name.
