Hortezuela de Océn
Village
Hortezuela de Océn is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, with 32 inhabitants (INE 2025), in a place that was a border area in the late Middle Ages with Roman traces: the Marquis of Cerralbo discovered a Celtiberian necropolis on its hill, and coins and sigillata pottery were recovered from a nearby Roman villa. Under the name Santa María de Almalaff it appeared on the boundary of the lordship of Molina, according to the fuero (charter) granted by Manrique de Lara. It preserves the remains of a medieval Arab castle and, next to it, the Romanesque hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Océn. The church of San Sebastián, from the 16th century, houses an early 17th-century altarpiece from workshops in Sigüenza. It celebrates San Sebastián on 20 January, the Virgin of Océn on the last Sunday of May, and its main festival on the second-to-last weekend of August.
