What to see and do in Abánades

Abánades
Village
Abánades is a municipality of the Serranía de Guadalajara comarca, with 64 inhabitants (INE 2025), set on the col of El Castillo, at 1,039 metres above sea level, watered by the river Tajuña, a sub-tributary of the Tajo. The nobleman Rui Pérez de Abánades, in the service of Alfonso VI of León and Castilla, took part in the Reconquista campaigns that led to the conquest of Guadalajara, Madrid and Toledo; his lineage, the House of Abánades, dates back to the 11th century. In March 1938, during the Civil War, the front stabilised around the hill of El Castillo, the most advanced position of the rebel troops in the sector; that battle, known as the Forgotten Battle, left more than 7,000 casualties between the two sides with barely any movement of the line.
