Castejón de Henares
Village
Castejón de Henares is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara district, with 62 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with 391 in the mid-19th century. Set in a narrow valley at 956 metres altitude, south of the Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park, it is one of the towns on the Camino del Cid. It preserves the church of San Miguel Arcángel, from the 16th century, built over the site of El Castillo, a rollo jurisdiccional (jurisdictional pillory) almost four metres tall converted into a fountain, and the so-called Casa del Cid, a 13th-century adobe dwelling at the entrance to the village. According to Menéndez Pidal, the village mentioned in the Cantar de mío Cid is Castejón de Henares, where the Cid lodged after taking the town by an ambush. Since 2016 the house has had its own archaeological project.
