Argecilla
Village
Argecilla is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, situated at 973 metres above sea level on a hill of tightly clustered houses, in the north of the comarca, above the deep valley carved by the river Badiel. It has about 74 inhabitants. The area has been occupied since the Neolithic, as shown by the prehistoric remains excavated since the mid-19th century by Nicanor de la Peña; the cave of la Solana may have served as a dwelling then. After the Castilian conquest of the 11th century it fell under the Tierra de Atienza, until in the early 14th century Ferdinand IV granted it to Ruy Pérez de Atienza. It preserves the parish church of San Miguel, from the 17th century and with three naves, and the palace-house of the marquises of Argecilla, from the same century.
