Algora
Village
Algora, a municipality in the northern sierra of Guadalajara with 89 inhabitants, stands at 1,116 metres above sea level over an area of almost 47 square kilometres; in the mid-19th century it had as many as 439 inhabitants. Within its municipal area a Cenomanian fossil site has been found with species from both Laurasia and Gondwana, and another from the Bronze Age beside the present-day A-2 motorway. From Algora, the old Madrid-Barcelona road branched off towards Daroca, Cariñena and Zaragoza. The village preserves the church of San Silvestre, from the 16th century, of stone construction and a single nave, a pillory topped with a ball, and the Romanesque hermitage of the Cristo del Humilladero, from the late 12th century, with a splayed portal and an oculus above a shield held by two angels.
