El Sotillo
Village
El Sotillo is a municipality in the province of Guadalajara, in Castilla-La Mancha, in the comarca of the Serranía de Guadalajara, set in a small valley perched above the bed of a stream, on Miocene limestone terrain crossed by three streams that are tributaries of the Tajuña. It belonged to the community of villa y tierra of Atienza until, in the 15th century, it passed to the County of Cifuentes and, in the 16th, to the Duchy of the Infantado, gaining independent status with the disentailments of the 19th century; it then had 172 inhabitants, compared with 28 today. It preserves the 17th-century parish church of Santa Marina, and the old hermitages of Nuestra Señora de Arauz and San Sebastián; its municipal area combines holm-oak and juniper woodland with aromatic undergrowth and is home to wild boar, deer and roe deer.
