Escariche
Village
Escariche is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 186 inhabitants, against 386 in the mid-19th century; its economy always rested on farming, together with an old charcoal-burning industry. Its church of San Miguel, from the second half of the 16th century, shows a geometric southern portal and holds a 17th-century altarpiece with paintings by Juan de Cerecedo, from 1576-1580, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, with a carving by Miguel Sánchez around 1571. From the same period is the large house of the Polo y Cortés family, lords of the town, with plain walls and a door topped by a large coat of arms; there in 1567 Nicolás Polo Cortés founded the convent of the Purísima Concepción, active until the Mendizábal disentailment. The village also preserves Alcarria farmhouses with large wooden eaves.
