Chillarón del Rey
Village
Chillarón del Rey is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, amid holm oak and oak woods next to the river Tagus. It belonged as a hamlet to the seigniory of the bishop of Cuenca, part of the lands of Pareja, until in November 1569 Philip II granted it the title of town, when it took the surname “del Rey”; the place remained under episcopal seigniory until its abolition in the 19th century. The church of Nuestra Señora de los Huertos preserves a Baroque high altarpiece dated around 1730, which combines the style of Churriguera and Ribera. The patronal festival of the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of August. It has 76 inhabitants (2025), compared with 481 in the mid-19th century.
