Durón
Village
Durón is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 108 inhabitants (INE 2025), on the boundary between the Alcarria plateau and the bank of the Tagus, today occupied by the Entrepeñas reservoir, which when built in 1953 flooded the old bridge and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, moved to a nearby hill. Beside the limestone site of the Hoz Angosta it preserves the baroque church of Santa María de la Cuesta, with an inscription of 1693 on the tower, a 16th-century pillory and blazoned houses from the 16th to the 18th centuries, among them that of the Baquero de Lirueña, a family of scribes who held high offices in the Holy Office. After the reconquest of the area in the early 12th century, the village belonged to the alfoz of Atienza, until in 1437 King John II granted it to his counsellor Gómez Carrillo.
