Auñón
Village
Auñón is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 156 inhabitants (INE 2025), between the Entrepeñas and Bolarque reservoirs, where the Tagus is dammed. Reconquered in the early 12th century, its first lords were the Ordóñez family, lords of Illana, who watched over the river from the Cuadrón tower; in 1178 the Order of Calatrava made it the seat of a commandery, with the commander's residence in a large house next to the town hall square. It preserves the church of San Juan Bautista, from the 15th-16th centuries, a medieval bridge over the Tagus documented in 1361 and rebuilt in 1461, the chapel of the Bishop of Salona (1612) and the hermitage of the Virgen del Madroñal, from the 17th century, whose festival is celebrated on the Sunday following 8 September.
