What to see and do in Las Mesas

Las Mesas
Village
Las Mesas is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 2,234 inhabitants, which belonged to the Marquisate of Villena and whose original name, Las Mesas Rubias, referred to the colour of the grain sown there. Within the La Mancha Saffron zone, its stigmas are hand-picked in October and toasted on a sieve over embers under a Protected Designation of Origin, in a collective sorting that needs on the order of two hundred thousand flowers to gather one kilo. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and several hermitages, among them that of the Santo Niño de la Bola, its patron, to whom it dedicates its festivities on the third Friday of August; also traditional are the collections held on the nights of 1 November and 24 December.

Stigmas of Crocus sativus gathered by hand in October and toasted in a sieve over embers, with a Protected Designation of Origin. Something of the order of two hundred thousand flowers are needed to gather a kilo, hence its price and the collective autumn stripping.
