El Pedernoso
Village
El Pedernoso is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in the southwest of Cuenca, at 772 m above sea level, with 1,113 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its settlement is documented from the Bronze Age, with the La Motilla site five hundred paces from the village, and in 1479 it rose up together with Pedroñeras and Las Mesas in the name of the Catholic Monarchs to claim direct dependence on the Crown against the marquis of Villena, achieving town status through captain Jorge Manrique. Situated on the route linking the Mediterranean ports with Toledo and Madrid, it had numerous inns; Cervantes knew it well, and Don Quixote and Sancho pass through it more than once. Its parish church is dedicated to la Asunción and its main festivities run from 23 to 27 July, in honour of Santa Ana.
