What to see and do in Olivares de Júcar

Olivares de Júcar
Village
Olivares de Júcar is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, set at 900 metres above sea level by the Júcar river and the Alarcón reservoir, whose construction in the 1950s flooded its most fertile vegas and hastened emigration. It was called simply Olivares until 1916, when it took its current name. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has sturdy buttresses and a façade with Doric capitals; it is completed by the 17th-century hermitage of San Roque, built in masonry near the plaza de Ejido, and the hermitage of San Isidro, outside the town centre and reached through the so-called Túnel del Pozo. It now lives on barley and sunflower farming, with a minor presence of olive groves, and has about 290 inhabitants.
