San Lorenzo de la Parrilla
Village
San Lorenzo de la Parrilla is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, 41 km from the provincial capital, in the transition between the highlands and the Mancha plain watered by the Marimota river. It was called simply Parrilla, for having arisen in a place abundant in vines, until in the late 16th or early 17th century it adopted the patronage of San Lorenzo, a martyr roasted on a grill, and absorbed the nearby hamlet of Belvis. Near the Júcar lived Zayd Abu Zayd, the last Arab king of Valencia, by then baptised as Vicente Belvis, who had a house in the locality. It preserves the church of San Pedro Apóstol, the palace of the marquesses of Cañete, from the 17th century, and the hermitage of la Santa Cruz, and has 1,119 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 2,092 in the mid-19th century.
