What to see and do in Castillo de Garcimuñoz

Castillo de Garcimuñoz
Village
Castillo de Garcimuñoz is a municipality in the La Mancha Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, at 936 m above sea level and 64 km from the capital. Its castle, which Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, built in 1458 on top of the alcázar that don Juan Manuel had built there — who favoured it among his many fortresses for the abundant falconry hunting in its hills —, preserves walls almost three metres thick and a gothic-Isabelline doorway of exceptional craftsmanship. Nearby, the poet and captain Jorge Manrique received the lance wound that cost him his life on 24 April 1479, while fighting the marquis's troops. Until the 17th century it held jurisdiction over hamlets such as Pinarejo or La Almarcha, which gradually became independent over time. It has 129 inhabitants (INE 2025).
