La Almarcha
Village
La Almarcha is a municipality in the province of Cuenca, in the transition zone between the Serranía and La Mancha, whose name comes from the Arabic al-marğ, "the meadow" or "settlement located in a vega". It sits at 875 metres above sea level, at the source of the río Rus — which downstream takes the names Córcoles and then Rus again before flowing into the Záncara —, and its territory, also crossed by streams that are tributaries of the Júcar, touches the Alarcón reservoir to the northeast. Its main monument is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the 16th and 17th centuries and of Renaissance craftsmanship, with projecting sections, roofs of differing heights and a powerful two-tier tower at its foot. Outside the town centre the chapels of San Bartolomé, San Antón and San Isidro are preserved. It has 469 inhabitants.
