What to see and do in Santa María del Campo Rus

Santa María del Campo Rus
Village
Santa María del Campo Rus, in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, province of Cuenca, takes its name from the church dedicated to Santa María around which the hamlet grew, after a watchtower of religious-military character was built there during the Reconquest. Located in the agrarian mancomunidad of the Mancha Baja, at 796 metres of altitude and beside the Santa María river, it enjoyed a prosperous period thanks to the saltpetre quarries, used to make gunpowder. It was called Santa María del Campo until the 1916 reform of place names, when the epithet Rus was added because of its location in that area. It also preserves a convent of Trinitarians and is the birthplace of the composer Carlos Patiño (1600-1675).
