Pinarejo
Village
Pinarejo is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, set in a transition zone between the Serranía and the Mancha, with 172 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with the 1,400 it once had in 1960. It was a hamlet of the Castillo de Garcimuñoz, itself governed by Alarcón, until it obtained town status in 1765, under Charles III. Since the 1960s the municipality has suffered heavy depopulation through emigration, chiefly toward Valencia and toward San Antonio Abad, in Ibiza, where already before then many residents used to go each October to pick olives in Cordoba and Jaén. Its church, from the late 17th century and of late-Renaissance design, has a Latin-cross plan with an octagonal dome, and a restored 19th-century windmill now serves as a cultural centre.
