What to see and do in Almedina

Almedina
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, whose name, of Arabic root, betrays its importance: it was one of the three most significant cities of Muslim La Mancha, alongside Almodóvar and Calatrava la Vieja, and controlled the passage towards Sierra Morena, to which a bridge of Roman origin preserved in the district is linked. It is the birthplace of the painter Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina, one of the great introducers of the Renaissance in Spain, whose works are reproduced through the streets in an open-air museum; it preserves the church of Santa María and the Baile de Ánimas, a tradition documented since the fourteenth century.
Church of Santa María de Almedina
Monument
The parish church of Santa María is the main church in Almedina and the centre of the monumental complex of this town in the southern Campo de Montiel. The municipality also preserves two historic hermitages listed among its heritage: that of the Virgen de los Remedios and that of San Cristóbal.
Roman bridge of Almedina
Monument
An old bridge of Roman origin preserved in the municipal district of Almedina, evidence of the roads that crossed this natural gateway towards Sierra Morena.
Open-Air Museum of the Painter Yáñez de Almedina
Monument
A set of reproductions of works by the painter Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina distributed through the streets of the town, turning the town centre into an open gallery.
Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina, disciple of Leonardo
Curiosity
The painter Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina (c. 1475-1540), a native of this town, travelled to Italy and is linked to the Ferrando Spagnolo who worked with Leonardo da Vinci on the Battle of Anghiari. He is one of the great introducers of the Renaissance in Spain.
The Dance of the Souls of Almedina
Activity
A tradition documented since the 14th century in which men bid to dance with the women, with the proceeds going to the souls in purgatory. It is held every year on 28 December, as part of the folklore and customs of Almedina, and the bidding can reach considerable sums of money.
Festivities of San Gregorio de Almedina
Activity
The fiestas de San Gregorio are the patron saint festivities of Almedina, in the Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real), in honour of San Gregorio, the village's patron saint. They are held on 9 May, with a procession and popular events that bring residents together around the figure of the saint.
Almedina, city of Islamic La Mancha
Curiosity
Its name, of Arabic root, points to its importance: it was one of the three most significant cities of Muslim La Mancha, along with Almodóvar and Calatrava la Vieja, and controlled the pass towards Sierra Morena.
