Castle-church of Santa Catalina Monument · Fuenllana, Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real The castle-church of Santa Catalina occupies the cerro del Torreón hill, in Fuenllana (Ciudad Real), with the site's occupation phases superimposed: a medieval 13th-century fortress, built by the Order of Santiago to defend the hamlet during the Reconquista, and a 15th- and 16th-century church built after its walls were pulled down in the mid-15th century, probably starting from the chapel that existed within the enclosure. The main construction work on the church, dedicated to Santa Catalina de Alejandría, concluded at the end of the 16th century, but by the mid-18th century the temple had ceased to be the centre of the village in favour of the new church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, and was dismantled. The hill continued to be used as a cemetery until it was abandoned in the early 20th century, and today it is preserved as a ruin. Photo: Fuenllanarq (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Fuenllana
