What to see and do in Tacoronte

Tacoronte
Village
Settled around 1497 after the conquest, it obtained the status of a royal domain (lugar realengo) in 1540, became an independent municipality in 1812, and received the title of Ciudad (city) from Alfonso XIII in 1911. Together with Acentejo, it gives its name to the wine-growing region of northern Tenerife. Its name comes from the old Guanche menceyato, which some authors interpret as "mountain of the turn" or "of the bend".
Iglesia de Santa Catalina Mártir
Monument
The parish church of the Santa Catalina-Las Toscas neighbourhood, which houses the image of Tacoronte's patron saint.
Exconvento de San Agustín
Monument
A former Augustinian convent in Tacoronte that preserves a gilded chapel and an image of Christ that is the object of particular local devotion.
Denominación de Origen Tacoronte-Acentejo
Food and drink
The first wine Denominación de Origen created in the Canary Islands, recognised by order of the Canary Islands Government's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of 22 January 1992. The protected area stretches 23 kilometres along the northern side of Tenerife, with 1,583 hectares of vineyard spread across Tacoronte, La Laguna, Tegueste, El Rosario, Santa Cruz (Anaga), El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria and Santa Úrsula, and is best known for its young red wines.
Los guachinches
Food and drink
The Tacoronte-Acentejo district, the wine-growing heart of Tenerife, is the birthplace of the guachinches: establishments that emerged in the 19th century in the very homes or wine cellars of grape growers to sell off the year's surplus wine, served with simple dishes such as gofio escaldado, ropa vieja or carne fiesta. They traditionally open from October to April, coinciding with the new wine season. A popular but undocumented etymology traces the word's origin to the English "watching".
Bosque de Agua García
Nature
A pocket of laurisilva forest in the high midlands of Tacoronte, with waymarked trails, which together with the ravines of Guayonje, San Jerónimo and San Juan makes up the municipality's forested landscape below the summit of Pedro Gil (1,302 m).
