What to see and do in La Victoria de Acentejo

La Victoria de Acentejo
Village
The municipality takes its name from the Castilian victory at the second battle of Acentejo, which brought the military conquest of Tenerife to a close; the addition "de Acentejo" was appended in 1916 to distinguish it from other places of the same name. In 2014 it received the title of Villa Histórica in recognition of that founding episode.
Segunda Batalla de Acentejo (1495)
Historical milestone
On 25 December 1495, in the same area as the previous year's Castilian defeat, the troops of Alonso Fernández de Lugo defeated the Guanches in the clash that ended the military conquest of Tenerife, the last island in the archipelago to be subdued. The adelantado vowed to build a church on the site, around which grew the settlement that took the name La Victoria.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación
Monument
Built to fulfil the vow made by the adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo after the 1495 victory: the original hermitage was replaced in 1537 by a sturdier church paid for by Gonzalo de Salamanca and other townspeople, suffered a fire in 1589, and was extended in the 18th century to its present appearance, with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling. Tradition places behind the church the centuries-old pine tree under which the first Mass was said after the battle. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), category of Monument, by decree of the Government of the Canary Islands of 20 December 1985.
Puente de Hierro (puente de Alfonso XIII)
Monument
A viaduct over the Barranco Hondo that linked La Victoria and Santa Úrsula, ending the isolation of the island's north. The design was commissioned from engineer José Eugenio Ribera by royal order of 16 September 1907, and the bridge, built of reinforced concrete and iron, opened on 20 March 1909 under the name Alfonso XIII; it was the first reinforced-concrete structure in the Canary Islands.
Cestería y silla victoriera
Curiosity
La Victoria de Acentejo keeps alive a traditional craft of basket-weaving and of the so-called "silla victoriera" (Victoria chair), near-lost trades that have been revived in recent decades and are displayed at the craft fair held during the patronal festival.
